(285)  Visa snags slow LDS missions to Brazil ...

Hundreds of Mormon missionaries assigned to serve in Brazil increasingly find themselves preaching not in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo or Fortaleza, but instead in Philadelphia, Pocatello, Idaho, or even Provo. The LDS Church’s São Paulo Missionary Training Center, which can accommodate up to 700 trainees, currently houses only about 60, none of whom is a U.S. Citizen. And the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has lowered the missionary age from 19 to 18 for male Brazilians to make up for the loss of full-time American missionaries.

Move over John Kerry. The Senate has a new master of the flip-flop. Sen. John Cornyn recently told a roomful of Hispanic conservatives who support immigration reform that he was in favor of the DREAM Act -- before he voted against it. Then, the Texas Republican did a rhetorical pirouette and declared he would favor the legislation again if it were part of a comprehensive immigration reform plan.

The LDS church has tried to find a balance between the teachings of the church, compassion and the law, calling the Utah Compact “a responsible approach to the urgent challenge of immigration reform” in a statement. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that BYU professor Charlie Morgan\'s research so far indicates that illegal immigrants commit no more violent and property crime than those born in the country.

Whenever she can, Irma Morantes sends $100 or so to help out her mother, who still lives in Mexico. The frequency of her gifts, though, depends on whether Morantes is working at the time and can spare the money. “If I’m not working, then my husband and I will only send money on her birthday or for a special occasion.” She cherishes each opportunity to send money to family members back home, knowing every little bit is appreciated and can make a big difference in their lives.

Community health clinics are a primary source of medical care for undocumented immigrants today and for the foreseeable future. Undocumented workers and their children don’t figure into President Barack Obama’s signature health overhaul. Safety-net programs such as Medicaid are generally off-limits. And undocumented immigrants will not be allowed to buy health coverage — even at full cost with their own funds — through exchanges, the online insurance retail markets set to open in 2014.
