SALT LAKE CITY — A Hispanic advocacy group gathered on the steps of the State Capitol Wednesday to encourage Latinos to vote in the upcoming elections. \"It is the right to vote that allows us to determine to a certain degree our own future by electing officials who reflect our views and will speak for us in government,\" said Sabrina Morales, the executive director of the group, Communities United. \"By not voting we are abdicating our right to influence government and allowing the will of others, whose opinions may be contrary to our own to prevail.\"

The Utah Attorney General’s Office has begun a criminal investigation into two women accused of cobbling together a list of 1,300 Utah residents purportedly in the country illegally. One of those women is Teresa Bassett, a 15-year state employee and computer specialist, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned from sources aware of her identity who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Gov. Gary Herbert said Tuesday that two state workers were responsible for compiling and distributing a list of personal information of 1,300 purported illegal immigrants, and that both would be fired. State officials had been investigating as many as 10 employees for possible involvement, but nobody else will face disciplinary action.

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Sen. Howard Stephenson (R-Draper) says that the state could benefit from proposed immigration reform that would allow certain immigrants a temporary stay to work. Stephenson says that he will sponsor new legislation that will challenge the federal government as the sole enforcer of immigration law. Stephenson says that under the new guest-worker permit system, a immigrant candidate could come to the U.S. for work, given that a cash bond is paid up-front, either by the worker or the potential employer.
