PHOENIX, Ariz.—Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has found himself at the center of yet another controversy, but this time the issue is not illegal immigration. A county budget report made public Wednesday accused his department of misspending as much as $80 million on immigration sweeps, public-corruption probes, and a range of other unauthorized activities and expenditures over the past five years.

Repealing or rewriting the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution will do little if anything at all to resolve the pressing and very complex issue of illegal immigration in this nation.

(499)  Push for Dream Act gets derailed...

WASHINGTON - The Dream Act has died again. On Tuesday, yet another attempt to push through the 9-year-old legislation was derailed. The measure, introduced in 2001 by Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Richard Durbin, D-Ill., would let children of illegal immigrants become legal residents if they attend college or serve in the U.S. military.

(503)  Undocumented Teen Wins Rare Reprieve...

Like thousands of other young Americans, Yves Gomes started college this semester. But few of his new classmates realized that Gomes almost didn’t make it. Though he sounds like any other American teenager, 17-year-old Yves is not American in the strictest legal sense. His parents, immigrants from India and Bangladesh, were never able to regularize their status in the United States.

(506)  EDITORIAL: Colin Powell is the right\'s voice of reason on immigration...

Sometimes it takes restating the obvious to break people free of their rabid misconceptions. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell did just that this weekend on a Sunday morning news show by imploring his fellow Republicans to return to common sense about immigration reform and find a way to bring millions of hard-working illegal immigrants into legal status, because they are an integral and vital part of the U.S. economy.

(507)  Kobach\'s record is light on successes...

So now Kris Kobach’s campaign has degenerated into expecting props for merely floating dreams of rewriting the U.S. Constitution. Last week the candidate for Kansas secretary of state gave a prime example of the contorted language of politics. Claim what you will do for future constituents, regardless of your ability to produce a result.

(508)  The DREAM Act deserves a yes vote...

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he will introduce the so-called DREAM Act, a key component of immigration reform, as an amendment to a defense authorization bill as early as Tuesday. (509)  A birthright that shouldn\'t be ...

Support is mounting for efforts in Congress to stop granting birthright — that is, automatic — citizenship to the U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants. Such a measure would bring America\'s citizenship policies into line with those of most of the rest of the world, where even the children of legal noncitizens do not automatically become citizens of the country where they are born.
