Utah continued to become more ethnically and racially diverse last year, according to Census Bureau estimates released Thursday, and Latinos grew to account for 12 percent of the population. The state\'s share of white, non-Latino residents slipped to 81 percent in 2009, down from 85 percent in 2000. So minorities made up nearly a fifth of Utah\'s population last year -- and a quarter of Salt Lake County\'s.

West Valley City » A public safety organization honored Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank Thursday for his opposition to mandates that would make police officers enforce U.S. immigration law. Burbank has publicly spoken against Utah lawmakers considering a measure similar to the Arizona law that requires police to verify the legal status of anyone reasonably suspected of being in the country without proper U.S. documentation.

The LDS Church should issue a definitive position on state laws, such as Arizona\'s, that allows non-federal law enforcement to request citizenship identification under certain conditions. It it does not, it risks being defined on the issue without its own input by extremists on both sides. Utah activist Tony Yapias, who runs the advocacy group Proyecto Latino de Utah, is urging Mormon Hispanics to write letters to LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson requesting that the church take a position on laws that crack down on illegal immigration, such as Arizona\'s law that allows police, if they have reason, to check the immigration status of people on the street.

Though not uniformly opposed to a proposed change to Utah\'s food stamp rules that would negatively effect households with undocumented workers, advocates for the poor want to know, \"Why this change? And why now?\" The question, posed at a hearing Tuesday, met with no answer from Utah Department of Workforce Services officials, who said the hearing was for public input only. But outside the hearing, Workforce Services spokesman Curt Stewart said the change was prompted by complaints by people who say the current rules in inequitable.

Last, but not least, the effects of the money they earn and spend is multiplied as it circulates through the economy. This generates income to others, the net profit from which is taxable.

The issue of undocumented immigration is a modern day Rorschach test. There is little change in the issue itself but opinions differ tremendously depending on individual perspectives. Each believes his or her opinion is a factual representation of the truth, but how one views the issue of immigration, like the Rorschach inkblots, is more telling of the person than of the issue itself.
